Short answer: To prime a pod coil, fill the pod, close it, and wait before your first puff: about 5 minutes for a 50/50 salt liquid and about 10 minutes for a thicker 70% VG liquid. Then take two or three gentle draws without firing if your device allows it, and start at low power. Rushing this step burns the cotton, and a burnt coil can’t be fixed.

Why priming matters

A coil is a metal heater wrapped in cotton. The cotton has to be fully soaked before the metal fires, or the heat hits dry cotton and scorches it. That scorched taste is called a dry hit, and once the cotton has burnt, it stays burnt. You’ll be throwing away a pod you paid for and filled five minutes earlier.

How to prime a pod coil, step by step

  1. Check the pod matches your liquid. Salt nicotine at 20mg to 50mg goes in pods of about 0.8Ω and up. Low-strength freebase suits lower-resistance pods. The freebase vs nic salt guide explains why.
  2. Fill to the line, not above it. Aim the bottle tip at the side wall of the pod, away from the centre tube, so liquid doesn’t run down the airflow channel.
  3. Close the pod and wipe it. Dry any liquid on the outside and on the contacts at the bottom.
  4. Wait. Stand the pod upright and leave it. Use the times in the table below.
  5. Prime-puff gently. On a draw-activated device, take two or three very short, light draws to pull liquid into the cotton. On a button device, draw without pressing the button.
  6. Start low. If your kit has adjustable power, start at the low end for the first few minutes, then raise it.

How long to wait

Liquid Example we sell Wait before first puff
50/50 PG/VG salt NASTY Salt 30ml, Pod Salt Core, Tokyo Salt Nic About 5 minutes
30/70 PG/VG freebase NASTY 60ml, Tokyo 60ml, Pod Salt 50ml About 10 minutes

Thicker liquid soaks more slowly. These times are a safe default; waiting longer never hurts.

The UAE factor: air conditioning and heat

Liquid thickness changes with temperature. In a cold, air-conditioned room, a 70% VG liquid is thicker and soaks into cotton more slowly, so give it the full 10 minutes or a little more. In heat, the same liquid thins out and wicks fast, but a freshly filled pod left in a hot car is also more likely to leak through the airflow. Fill indoors, let it soak indoors, and don’t leave a full pod baking in the car.

There’s one more UAE habit worth breaking: filling a pod in a parked car on a hot afternoon and vaping straight away. Do it inside, wait, then go.

How to tell it’s primed

Look at the cotton through the pod’s intake holes if you can see them: it should look dark and wet, not white. Your first puff should taste of the flavour, not of hot cotton. If the first puff tastes faintly burnt, stop, wait another five minutes, and try again gently. If it tastes strongly burnt, the cotton is already scorched.

Keeping it primed

Priming isn’t only for new pods. A pod run nearly empty can dry-hit too. Refill when the level drops to about a quarter, and don’t chain-vape ten puffs in a row; leave a few seconds between draws so the cotton can soak back up.

Sweet and very dark liquids coat coils faster, so a coil may need replacing sooner with those. Signs and timings are in when to replace a vape coil.

Kits this applies to

Any refillable pod kit, including those we stock: OXVA Xlim Go 2 and Xlim Pro 3 (3ml top-fill pods), Vaporesso XROS Cube and Luxe QS (2ml pods), SMOK Novo X and Aspire Pixo. Closed pods such as Myle and JUUL2 come prefilled and pre-soaked, so you can use them straight away. Prefilled disposables don’t need priming either.

Priming FAQ

How long should I wait after filling a new pod?

About 5 minutes for 50/50 salts and about 10 minutes for 70% VG liquids.

Can I fix a burnt coil?

No. Once the cotton is scorched, the burnt taste stays. Replace the pod or coil.

Do I need to prime a disposable?

No. Disposables arrive with the cotton already soaked.

Why is my new pod gurgling?

Usually it was overfilled, or liquid got into the centre tube. Remove the pod, blow gently through the bottom with a tissue over the top, wipe the contacts and try again.
