Switching From Cigarettes to a Pod Kit: What the First Week Is Really Like

Short answer: The first week of switching from cigarettes to a pod kit is mostly about habit, not hardware. Choose a strength that matches your smoking, take short cigarette-style draws, and expect to vape more often than you smoked at first. A few cigarettes in week one is common and isn’t failure. Most of the adjustment is learning a new routine.

We’re a vape shop, not a clinic. If you want help stopping smoking, a doctor or pharmacist can offer options alongside or instead of vaping.

Before day one: set up for success

Pick the strength. Under ten cigarettes a day, start at 20mg salt. Ten to twenty, 30mg to 35mg. A pack or more, 50mg. Too low a strength is a frequent reason people drift back to cigarettes in the first week. See the nic salt strength guide.

Pick a tight pod. A 0.8Ω to 1.2Ω pod gives a draw close to a cigarette. The Vaporesso XROS Cube (AED 85) with its 1.2Ω pod, or the OXVA Xlim Go 2 (AED 95) with the airflow closed, both do this well. Shortlist: pod kits under AED 150.

Prime it. Fill the pod and wait five minutes before the first puff; see how to prime a pod coil.

How to draw: the part nobody explains

Smokers usually take a mouthful of smoke, then inhale. Do the same with a pod kit: a slow draw of two or three seconds into your mouth, then breathe it into your lungs. This is called mouth-to-lung, or MTL. Don’t take a huge lungful straight in like a shisha hose; with a salt liquid, that’s harsh.

Expect less “hit” per puff than a cigarette. Nicotine from a vape usually arrives a little more slowly, so take a few puffs, spaced out, rather than one big one.

Switching from cigarettes to a pod kit: the first week, day by day

Days What’s common What helps
1 to 2 Vaping often, unsure if it’s “working”, reaching for cigarettes at usual trigger times Keep the vape where your cigarettes used to be; vape at your usual smoking moments
3 to 4 Cravings at the hardest moments: after meals, with coffee, in the car, on breaks Have the vape with you at those moments; step up strength if cravings stay strong
5 to 7 Routine forming; fewer cigarettes Note which moments still trigger a cigarette and plan for them

Everyone’s week is different. These are patterns people often describe, not predictions for you.

Common setbacks, and the fix

  • “It doesn’t satisfy me.” Usually too low a strength, or long shisha-style lungfuls. Try a higher strength and shorter MTL draws.
  • “It tastes burnt.” An unprimed pod, or chain-vaping. Wait between puffs; replace a burnt pod.
  • “My throat is sore.” Too high a strength or too much power. Step down or lower the wattage.
  • “I smoked three cigarettes today.” That happens. Look at when, and plan for those moments tomorrow.

UAE-specific habits to plan around

Many smokers here smoke in the car and at office smoking areas. The car is a trap for a vape in summer, because the heat damages the battery and the liquid. Bring it in with you; see battery safety. At work, vape where smoking is allowed; vaping follows the same rules as smoking in enclosed public places. Shisha nights with friends are another trigger; some people bring a low-strength shisha-style device for those instead.

After week one

If you’re mostly vaping and smoking rarely, you’ve done the hard part. From here, some people stay at their strength; others step down slowly, bottle by bottle. The strength guide covers stepping down, and the pod systems guide covers looking after your kit.

FAQ

Is it normal to vape a lot in the first week?

Yes. Vaping delivers nicotine differently from smoking, and many people vape more often at first.

Should I use a disposable or a pod kit to switch?

Either works. A disposable is simplest for the first week; a pod kit gives more strength choice and costs less to run.

Where can I get help to stop smoking in the UAE?

Speak to your doctor, a pharmacist, or check the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention.
